This class will spell out simple tricks to learn good design in an easy way. Do you think your paintings are lacking something to make them stand out from others? Simplification and balance tips make this class a sure winner! The first two days, we'll do fun exercises that will make you sharpen your knowledge of good composition and design. But don't let that scare you away. These fun studies are winning paintings, all by themselves. On the last 2 days, we'll be painting people, very simply done, in about 15" squares.  Don't worry if you can't draw.  We'll be tracing from enlarged photographs.  I call them people with personalities, because they are portrayed in a semi-abstract manner.  Check out "Scent of a Woman" on my original page of my website, to get an idea of People with Personality!

In this workshop, we’ll be experimenting with many new mediums, and trying new things!  Karen will bring many new products, so that you won’t have purchase a lot, till you’ve tried them out in this workshop!  We’ll start with a busy painting, and then each painting will give you ideas for the next painting.  (It’s like the friendship bread that we used to share.  It grows and grows!) Experience the hands-on demos, fun tricks, design and color techniques to create more meaningful paintings. This workshop emphasizes intuitive painting where students will create many works of art that are eye catching show stoppers!

The new mediums include watercolor, collage, acrylic, colored pencils, calligraphy pens, gesso, crayons, and metallics.  This workshop will be mainly abstract and semi-abstract paintings, but some students may wish to add traditional subjects, so bring your favorite reference photos.
This is a creative journey to loosen you up and spark your imagination.  We’ve specifically scheduled it at the same week as a Karlyn Holman workshop, so we’ll have lots of fun in the evenings too!

In this workshop, we’ll be painting farm animals, and making them different than ordinary paintings.  This will be achieved by the use of crayons, magic markers, colored pencils, and collage.  A strong sense of design will be taught along with exaggeration of our subject matter.  We’ll be stretching the truth!  Lots of fun!!!!  Each day, the students will learn new techniques to make their paintings stand out from other animal paintings.  They may paint any barnyard animal that they wish.  Every day will be something new!  Karen’s easy lessons make this workshop a “must do”!  She always gives lots of individual attention and gives many handouts for easy referral during painting.

Students will learn how to make their subjects look as if you can see through them. Also they will learn how to use clean, pure, transparent watercolor washes.  They start out with Small Color Study paintings, where students will learn how to get glowing colors, on the first day.  Then, they will increase the size and add new techniques the next day.  They will pick a familiar subject and paint it in a totally different way, using everything that we’ve learned on the first day.  Students will make their ordinary paintings into extraordinary paintings.

This workshop is for beginners or intermediate painters, and will stretch you to the next level.  Karen will teach many ways to paint exciting florals or any other subject matter that will be extraordinary and something different from ordinary subjects.  We will learn creative ways to make your paintings exciting and have lots of fun with collage on several of the days.   Get ready to stretch and loosen up, but have fun at the same time!  Karen's workshops are known for the great design tips, but she is known for simplifying everything into a really fun and easy format.  The first 3 days will be working with colors and illusionary effects (like ghosts, in that you can see through objects.)  The last 2 days will involve adding collage and abstract backgrounds.
